European Union Naval Forces Free Sailors Following Somali Piracy Incident on Vessel
EU naval forces have safely freed two dozen crew members from a Malta-registered oil tanker that was targeted by pirates off the shoreline of Somali waters.
The Hellas Aphrodite, which was carrying petrol from India to South African destinations, was taken over on the recent incident when armed pirates began shooting with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades before taking control of the ship.
All sailors secured themselves inside a secure safe room while the pirates took control of the marine transport.
Successful Rescue Operation
A Spanish warship, operating under the EU's anti-piracy mission, arrived at the ship on the following day. Elite military units boarded the vessel and found all two dozen sailors safe and sound.
"All personnel is safe and no injuries have been documented. During the ordeal, they stayed in the citadel in constant communication with the operation," officials stated, noting that a "demonstration of power" had convinced the attackers to leave the ship before the naval unit arrived.
Continuing Danger
Officials added that the danger level in the region "continues to be serious" as the pirates are still in the vicinity.
The mission involved a helicopter, unmanned aerial vehicle and surveillance aircraft. Just hours earlier, a different vessel in the identical region was targeted by a small speedboat but managed to evade it.
Return of Maritime Crime
This event marks the latest in a series of incidents that have created concern about a resurgence of piracy in the region.
Piracy operations had decreased when global maritime security and protective protocols were introduced after peaking more than a decade ago.
Nevertheless, attacks by militant groups on vessels in the Arabian Sea, which have been conducted for the recent period, have led ships to be diverted through East Africa's Indian Ocean - opening up new opportunities for local pirate groups.
Statistical Overview
- Seven reported incidents of maritime crime occurred off the coast of the Somali region last year
- Several vessel takeovers were documented among these incidents
- Only one incident of maritime crime was reported in the preceding year
Maritime security experts are closely watching the developments as shipping companies navigate these increasingly dangerous waters.
